Sweet Karam Coffee Brings the Tradition of Modakam-Making Back Home This Ganesh Chaturthi

At the heart of the celebration is the brand’s DIY Modakam Kit, complete with everything a family needs to shape, steam and share their own modaks at home. The kit turns Ganesh Chaturthi into a hands-on experience, drawing children and families closer to the rituals, stories and food traditions of the festival.

Chennai, Sept 12: This Ganesh Chaturthi, Sweet Karam Coffee is bringing back a tradition that once began in the kitchen making modakams together at home. The clean-label South Indian food brand on a mission to take the ‘Taste and Tales of South India to the world’, has launched its DIY Modakam Kit, designed to turn the preparation of one of Ganesh Chaturthi’s most beloved festive foods into a family experience.

For generations, festive food was not simply something that appeared on the dining table. It was made in the kitchen, with children watching their grandparents shape the modakams, learning recipes by observation and listening to stories associated with the festival. These seemingly small moments became the way food traditions, cultural knowledge and family memories travelled from one generation to the next. Sweet Karam Coffee aims to bring back some of those moments.

The DIY Modakam Kit contains rice flour, a traditional jaggery-coconut filling and a modakam mould, giving families what they need to make modakams together while retaining the most important part of the experience.

Anand Bharadwaj, Co-founder and Chief Culture Officer, Sweet Karam Coffee, said, “The easiest thing would have been to sell another box of modakams. But festivals were never only about eating what finally came to the table. A large part of the memory was in making it together, shaping the modakams, getting a few wrong, learning from somebody at home and waiting for the first batch to be ready. We wanted to bring that part back. The DIY kit simply makes it easier for more people to participate in the tradition rather than only consume the finished product.”

Staying true to its core philosophy of taking the taste and tales of South India to the world, Sweet Karam Coffee has partnered with The Good Doll to build a richer story around Ganesh Chaturthi, going beyond simply launching a new festive product. The collaboration brings together food, storytelling and creative play, rooted in the belief that festivals are best experienced and passed down through participation and stories. While the DIY Modakam Kit brings the tradition of making a festive favourite into the home, the partnership with The Good Doll adds another layer to the experience, creating an opportunity for children and parents to discover the stories, rituals and traditions of Ganesh Chaturthi together.

For Sweet Karam Coffee, this reflects a larger belief that traditional food is a gateway to a wider cultural heritage, shaped by recipes, rituals, stories, memories and family traditions. Its philosophy of “bringing the goodness of homestyle recipes, served with Janaki Paati’s love” extends beyond preserving the taste of traditional food to keeping alive the stories and experiences that surround it. This belief continues to shape the brand’s festive initiatives, from its traditional festive range to the Big South Indian Festival, where food comes together with music, games, rituals and cultural experiences to create a more immersive celebration of South Indian traditions.

With the DIY Modakam Kit and its collaboration with The Good Doll, Sweet Karam Coffee is creating more than a festive offering  it is creating a reason for families to make, listen, learn and celebrate together, while giving the next generation a more meaningful way to experience the traditions behind Ganesh Chaturthi. The DIY Modakam Kit is available through Sweet Karam Coffee’s website and select online and offline channels.
