Odisha Governor Stresses Compassion as Key to Nation Building at RDWU Event

Bhubaneswar, Sept 20: Highlighting the enduring power of compassion and empathy, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, described them as “living forces capable of transforming families, societies, and even nations.” He was speaking at the 12th Regional Conference of the Theosophical Order of Service (TOS), Odisha Region, held at Rama Devi Women’s University on Friday.

The event, held in collaboration with the Philosophy Department of RDWU, centred on the theme “Compassion and Empathy in Building Bridges, Not Walls”. The Governor called on all citizens, especially the youth, to dedicate themselves to acts of love and service that transcend social divisions and foster a more unified society.

Building a Culture of Compassion

In his address, the Governor praised the Theosophical Order of Service and RDWU for their joint efforts in cultivating a culture of knowledge, service, and universal values. He said such collaborations help nurture a generation that upholds truth, harmony, and universal brotherhood over narrow self-interest.

Referring to the fast-paced technological and material advancements of the modern era, he cautioned that moral and spiritual values must not be left behind. “True progress lies not only in infrastructure and innovation but also in how we treat the poor, the sick, the marginalised, and even the environment,” he said.

Inspiration from the Past, Vision for the Future

The Governor recalled the legacy of Annie Besant, freedom fighter and founder of the Theosophical Order of Service, whose life was devoted to translating high ideals into compassionate action. He referred to the TOS motto — “A union of those who love in the service of all that suffer” — and said it echoes strongly with the ethos of Odisha, a land symbolised by the teachings of Lord Jagannath, representing universal love and equality.

Youth and the Call for Selfless Service

Addressing the student community, the Governor encouraged them to adopt the values of selfless service, compassion, and empathy, calling it a path toward inner growth, leadership, and meaningful living.

He also lauded the TOS Odisha Region for its active contributions to women’s empowerment, gender equality, education, and social welfare, praising their commitment to creating inclusive and compassionate communities.

Key Contributions and Participation

TOS National Director K. Sivaprasad delivered the keynote address, reflecting on the spiritual and social vision of the organisation.

Deepa Padhi, President of the TOS Odisha Region, delivered the welcome address, emphasising the role of empathy in building meaningful human connections.

The conference brought together academics, thinkers, students, and social workers to reflect on how spiritual values can help address modern challenges and reinforce the foundation of a compassionate society.

Conclusion

In a time marked by rapid change and growing divides, the message from the conference was clear: Empathy and compassion are not outdated ideals, but essential tools for healing and transformation. As Odisha continues to blend tradition with progress, such platforms are vital in guiding society towards inclusive, value-based development.
