New Delhi, 26.3.2025: In the heart of Bihar’s Mithila region, the Paag—a traditional headdress—has long symbolized dignity, honor, and cultural pride. Historically worn by men during significant life events and ceremonies, the Paag’s association with societal hierarchies limited its accessibility. However, in 2016, Dr. Birbal Jha, a visionary author, social thinker, and educationist, launched the ‘Paag for All’ initiative. This movement aimed to democratize the Paag, transforming it into a symbol of unity, equality, and cultural renaissance.

The Paag: A Symbol of Mithila’s Heritage

The Paag dates back to ancient times, when it was made from plant leaves. It evolved over generations into a more sophisticated form that is now a vital part of Maithil identity. The color of the Paag has special meaning: red is worn by bridegrooms and during holy thread rituals, mustard-colored Paags are worn at weddings, and white Paags are designated for seniors. This headgear not only represents respect and honor, but also shows Mithila’s rich cultural legacy.

The Inception of ‘Paag for All’

Recognizing the Paag’s deep cultural significance and potential to overcome societal differences, Dr. Birbal Jha, the Youngest Living Legend of Mithila, launched the ‘Paag for All’ campaign in 2016. The objectives were diverse. :

• Promote Social Equality: By encouraging people from various backgrounds to wear the Paag, the campaign aimed to break down a historical caste and class barrier and promote a sense of unity.
• Cultural Revival: The effort sought to revive the custom of wearing the Paag, assuring its relevance in modern society and preserving it for future generations.
• Global Recognition: Elevating the Paag to an international platform, aspired to have it established as a symbol of India’s vast cultural variety.
• Youth Engagement: ‘Paag for All’ sought to instil pride in Maithil heritage and encourage active participation in cultural preservation by involving the youth.

Challenges and Triumphs

Dr. Jha’s progressive vision was met with resistance from traditionalists who viewed the Paag’s inclusivity as a deviation from long-held customs. Extending the Paag’s significance to women and people across all castes challenged rooted societal norms. Despite initial criticism, the campaign gained momentum, resonating with those who envisioned a more inclusive society.

Paag made the mark!

• Inclusion in English Dictionaries: The term ‘Paag’ was listed into the Macmillan and Collins Dictionaries, marking a monumental step in bringing regional cultural symbols to global awareness.
• Philatelic Recognition: Mithila’s Paag was featured on India Post’s stamp in the year 2017. This not only honored the Paag but also highlighted its cultural significance on a national scale. It was all thanks to Dr Birbal Jha’s efforts.

A Personal Reflection

Dr. Jha’s passion for cultural preservation is deeply personal. Growing up in Mithila, he witnessed firsthand the Paag’s importance in societal ceremonies and its ability to transmit respect and admiration. His experiences urged a determination to guarantee that such a powerful symbol did not fade away, but rather evolved to represent inclusivity and unity.

The Broader Impact

The ‘Paag for All’ campaign has crossed regional boundaries, stimulating conversations about cultural preservation and social equality across India. It serves as a testament to how traditional symbols can be revitalized to promote contemporary values of inclusivity and respect. By redefining the Paag’s value, the campaign has not only preserved a vital aspect of Mithila’s heritage but has also set a precedent for future cultural preservation efforts or initiatives.

Looking At the Future

The journey of the ‘Paag for All’ initiative underscores the dynamic nature of culture and its ability to adapt and flourish cultural heritage. As the campaign continues to gain momentum, it paves the way for future endeavors that celebrate diversity while honoring tradition.

Dr. Jha’s visionary and remarkable leadership reminds us that cultural symbols, when embraced collectively, have the power to unite communities, bridge barriers, and inspire positive change.

At Last

The ‘Paag for All’ program represents a cultural rebirth, transforming a traditional head wear into a symbol of togetherness and equality. Dr. Birbal Jha and the Mithilalok Foundation worked tirelessly to rehabilitate the Paag, ensuring that its legacy lives on and inspires future generations.
