Vizhinjam Begins EXIM Operations, Kerala Looks to Attract New Investment

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 18: Vizhinjam International Seaport has entered a new phase with the start of export-import operations, strengthening Kerala’s ambitions to build a major trade, logistics and investment hub around the port.

Vizhinjam Begins EXIM Operations, Kerala Looks to Attract New Investment

Two containers were flagged off from the port on Tuesday, marking the beginning of regular EXIM operations. The development expands Vizhinjam’s role beyond transshipment and opens the port to direct international cargo movement.

The Kerala government has assured investors of regulatory support and improved infrastructure to encourage greater use of the port. The focus is on making it easier for businesses to move goods through Vizhinjam while creating a wider economic ecosystem around the facility.

As part of this broader strategy, the state is also introducing Mission Samudra, a port-led development initiative aimed at strengthening logistics, industrial activity and connectivity in the region.

The start of EXIM operations is expected to benefit exporters, importers, logistics operators, manufacturers and warehousing businesses. Increased cargo movement could also create new opportunities for local enterprises and generate employment across several supporting sectors.

Vizhinjam’s location near major international shipping routes gives the port a strategic advantage in connecting Kerala and the wider South Indian market with global trade. An earlier trial shipment to Valencia, Spain, demonstrated the port’s ability to handle international export cargo.

For Kerala, the development represents more than the movement of containers. The larger ambition is to build a strong port-led economy where shipping, manufacturing, logistics and other businesses grow together.

The success of this vision will depend on continued investment in roads, logistics facilities, warehousing, industrial infrastructure and efficient regulatory systems.

With EXIM operations now underway, Vizhinjam is positioned to play a larger role in Kerala’s trade ambitions and could become an important driver of investment, employment and long-term economic growth.
